Our own storyboards

Terror In The Night



After having done are research on narrative structure and editing we then created our own small story board structure with filming techniques,how long the clips are shown for and what transitions to use.
Our task was to create a horror story called terror in the night we used props structure.  We made sure the viewer got to know the characters personality's and had a clear beginning a middle and end.
After this we changed the frames around and played with the structure.

Our original story was three friends trying to get home where they got lost in the wood and got killed by a monster.  as we can see,from changing the frames (narrative structure) it completly changes the story,gives a differnt meening and a differnt feel.  The genre stayed the same as a horror but the way the story is told and the effect it would have on the viewer is alot different.

Editing&narrative Theory


Narrative Theory:

There are four structures to a narrative:

Linear-runs smoothly in a straight line, when it is not broken up.

Open structure- step-by-step, such as where an author creates a story's ending before the middle is finished.

Closed structure-definite ending,clear ending.

Circular structure-cycle starts and ends in the same place


Tzvetan Todarov-Todarov suggests narrative is simply equilibrium, disequilibrium, new equilibrium and the process simply recycles or loops back around starts where it finsihes allowing the narrative to repeat.

Vladamire Prop- Props believed character had a narrative function.  he believed they help to apply structure for the text,he foun typical charcarters in folk tales noted their scenes and typical characterists to follow.

Claude Levi- Strauss- Claudes' narrative was constant creation of conflict/opposition propels narrative. Narrative can only end on a resolution of conflict. Opposition can be visual for example,light/darkness, movement/stillness or conceptual for example love/hate, control/panic. These are know as Binary oppositions. as being created by constant conflict 
of binary opposites. 

Roland Barthes- Barthes' has five codes- action, enigma, semic, symbolic and cultural. These Specific codes have different meanings to differnt people and the way they have been represented in the narrative,these are then interpretted by the audience.








EDITING:
Editing is when differnt scenes of a movie a added to gether in a timline,selecting shots are combining into sequences and use transitions,cutting and various other techniques .
The main transitions used in T.V are known as:
Crossfade,
Fade to white/black,
Wipe,
Straight cut.

How can genre aid you in relation to your brief?
my brief is to create titles for a fiction film that lasts no longer than 2 minutes.  genre can help me to get a better picture of my plan by disiding what genre it will be: 
Horror, 
romance, 
drama, 
sci-fi, 
comedy, etc.
this will help me to get a good structure as they all have a unique characters, props, and mise-en-scene.
i can then start to think of a structure for my titles including detailed descriptions of my characters, locations, and story thinking about the type of dialouge that can be used for my film.  i can analyse other films of the same genre to understand the structure and dialouge of charcters better.
Genre can aid me find my target audience and there intrests  to draw them into viewing my short film.
Genre can also help me deside on the events and the conclusions that my target viewers of genre will be wanting to find out so they are left wanting to find out more on a cliff hanger and watch the full movie after being drawn in by the titles.
