Editing&narrative Theory

Narrative Theory:

There are four structures to a narrative:

Linear-runs smoothly in a straight line, when it is not broken up.

Open structure- step-by-step, such as where an author creates a story's ending before the middle is finished.

Closed structure-definite ending,clear ending.

Circular structure-cycle starts and ends in the same place

Tzvetan Todarov-Todarov suggests narrative is simply equilibrium, disequilibrium, new equilibrium and the process simply recycles or loops back around starts where it finsihes allowing the narrative to repeat.

Vladamire Prop- Props believed character had a narrative function.  he believed they help to apply structure for the text,he foun typical charcarters in folk tales noted their scenes and typical characterists to follow.

Claude Levi- Strauss- Claudes' narrative was constant creation of conflict/opposition propels narrative. Narrative can only end on a resolution of conflict. Opposition can be visual for example,light/darkness, movement/stillness or conceptual for example love/hate, control/panic. These are know as Binary oppositions. as being created by constant conflict
of binary opposites.

Roland Barthes- Barthes' has five codes- action, enigma, semic, symbolic and cultural. These Specific codes have different meanings to differnt people and the way they have been represented in the narrative, these are then interpretted by the audience.
